Intervention for impaired motor planning for speech (childhood or acquired apraxia of speech).

Apraxia of speech is a difficulty planning and sequencing the movements needed for speech, even though the muscles are not weak. It can be developmental (childhood apraxia of speech) or acquired after a stroke.

Signs to watch for

  • Limited babbling and late first words
  • Inconsistent errors on the same word
  • Groping movements of the mouth to start words
  • Understanding much better than speaking

Our approach

Therapy is based on motor learning principles: frequent, intensive practice of movement sequences with visual, tactile and auditory cues that are gradually faded, plus supportive communication while speech develops.
