Managing hypersensitivity or under-responsiveness to touch through therapy.

Tactile sensitivity means over- or under-reacting to touch. Children may be distressed by clothing labels, haircuts, nail cutting, messy play or certain food textures, while others seem not to notice pain or mess.

Signs to watch for

  • Strong reactions to clothing, haircuts, tooth brushing or face washing
  • Avoiding sand, paint, play dough or messy hands
  • Picky eating linked to food textures
  • Disliking hugs or unexpected touch

Our approach

Our occupational therapists assess sensory processing and use a sensory integration approach: graded, play-based touch experiences, deep pressure and heavy work activities, and a personalised sensory diet for home and school.
