Supporting speech development at the expected age.

A late talker is a toddler whose words and sentences are behind those of peers. Early assessment makes a real difference: some children catch up, but it is impossible to know in advance which ones will.

Signs to watch for

  • No gestures such as pointing or waving by 12 months
  • No meaningful words by 18 months
  • Fewer than 50 words or no two-word phrases at 2 years
  • Speech that strangers cannot understand at 3 years

Our approach

We assess understanding, expressive language, play, communication and hearing history, then provide play-based therapy and coach parents in strategies such as modelling, expanding and waiting for the child to communicate.
