Professional support for developing and strengthening gross motor skills.

Gross motor skills involve the large muscles used for walking, running, jumping, climbing, balance and ball games. Children with gross motor difficulties may seem clumsy, tire quickly or avoid playground activities.

Signs to watch for

  • Frequent falls or bumping into things
  • Difficulty with stairs, hopping or standing on one leg
  • Avoiding climbing, swings or ball games
  • Trouble learning to ride a bike or scooter

Our approach

Our occupational therapists assess balance, coordination, strength and posture, then use obstacle courses, balance boards, climbing and ball games to build skills through play. Families receive a home and playground programme.

Frequently Asked Questions

Gross motor skills are movements that use large muscle groups, such as walking, running, jumping, climbing and balancing.

If after age 3–4 your child falls much more often than peers, struggles with stairs or balance, or avoids active play, an assessment is recommended.

Play-based gross motor support for children is provided by occupational therapists, and may be combined with physiotherapy when needed.
