Supporting speech and articulation in individuals with cleft lip and/or palate.

Cleft lip and palate is a congenital difference that is repaired surgically, but many children still need speech therapy after surgery to develop clear speech.

Signs to watch for

  • Nasal-sounding speech (hypernasality)
  • Air escaping through the nose on pressure sounds
  • Compensatory sounds made at the back of the mouth or throat
  • Language delay linked to ear infections

Our approach

We support families from infancy, monitor babbling and first words after surgery, and provide articulation therapy for speech errors, working in line with the cleft surgical team. Persistent nasal air escape is referred for surgical review.

Frequently Asked Questions

Family guidance starts in infancy; regular therapy usually begins around age 2–3 if speech errors or nasality are present.

Some children develop typical speech, but many need therapy for established sound errors or resonance problems.

If nasality is learned, therapy can help. If the soft palate cannot close structurally, further surgical assessment may be needed.
