Regulating speech rate and improving fluency.

Rapid or cluttered speech is speech that is so fast and irregular that listeners struggle to understand it. Syllables and word endings are swallowed, sentences are left unfinished and the speaker often does not notice the problem.

Signs to watch for

  • Swallowing syllables and word endings
  • Frequent fillers and unfinished sentences
  • Speeding up when excited or telling long stories
  • Often being asked to repeat or slow down

Our approach

We assess speech rate, clarity and fluency, then build awareness with recordings, teach pacing, pausing and clear articulation, and practise in real-life situations such as phone calls and presentations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Talking fast is not a disorder in itself. When it reduces intelligibility, with swallowed syllables and disorganised speech, it is called cluttering and can be treated.

People who stutter are aware of their blocks; people who clutter often are not, and their speech improves when they pay attention.

Reading aloud with marked pauses, syllable-timed reading, metronome practice and recording and reviewing your own speech.
