Assessment and therapy for difficulties in the use of sounds according to language rules.

In a phonological disorder, a child can produce sounds but uses them incorrectly in predictable patterns, for example saying "tat" for "cat" or dropping final sounds.

Signs to watch for

  • Replacing back sounds with front sounds
  • Replacing s or sh with t
  • Dropping final sounds or syllables
  • Speech hard to understand after age 4

Our approach

We analyse the child's error patterns and use pattern-based approaches such as minimal pairs, auditory discrimination and home games, so that several sounds improve at once. This also supports later reading skills.

Frequently Asked Questions

A difficulty learning the sound rules of a language: the child can make the sounds but uses them in the wrong places in predictable patterns.

In articulation disorders the child cannot physically produce the sound; in phonological disorders the problem is the sound system and patterns.

Children with phonological disorders have a higher risk of reading difficulties; preschool therapy reduces this risk.
